01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Housed in a renovated traditional wooden house, Cafe Kanmido offers carefully prepared set meals and house-made sweets in a serene setting. The ground floor provides casual table seating, while the second floor invites guests to remove their shoes and relax on tatami mats. Crisp white interior elements blend with warm Japanese carpentry, creating a comfortable space suited for solo dining or an unhurried catch-up with friends.
Lunches Built on Vegetables and Dashi
At lunchtime, sets featuring multi-grain rice, hearty miso soup, and small side dishes are the main draw. Highlights include taco rice served with spiced ground meat and a sunny egg yolk, as well as chicken thigh tatsuta-age seasoned with shio-koji. Each dish balances generous portions with a bounty of fresh vegetables. A warm sip of dashi-rich miso soup provides an immediate sense of comfort, slowing down the pace of a busy day.
Seasonal Tarts and a Broad Tea Selection
Dessert is an essential part of the visit, led by tarts that change with the seasons. Notable creations include a whole-wheat crust layered with smooth kabocha pumpkin pudding, a tart sweet-and-sour strawberry milk pudding tart, and an earthy black sesame pudding tart, all made with restrained sweetness to showcase their core ingredients. Beverages range from refreshing house-made lemon sodas and dekopon citrus squash to pots of pesticide-free Ureshino black tea from Saga Prefecture and flavored herbal infusions.
Antipasti and Late-Night Cafe Hours
As dusk sets in, the menu shifts to an array of à la carte dishes meant to be shared over wine or house sangria. Colorful antipasti platters and sizzling ajillo lead into heartier fare like a juicy hamburg steak cloaked in cheddar cheese and avocado sauce, or freshly baked pizzas. Because the cafe stays open into the evening for tea and cake, it serves equally well as a gentle, quiet retreat to close out the night.
